The City of Bloomington is looking for feedback on a plan to remove traffic signals from two downtown intersections.
The city's Public Works department has proposed removing the traffic signals on Front Street at Main Street and Center Street, across from the McLean County Law and Justice Center. City crews preparing for upcoming resurfacing on Front Street recently found "failed galvanized conduit and handholds" that would cost at least $15,000 to repair, city officials said.
Traffic has declined in the area since the 1980s, officials said. The signals were originally built in the 1940s and 1950s and have far exceeded their life expectancy, officials said.
Public Works has proposed removing the signals and adding pedestrian bumpouts to increase safety.
